Why The Compass?

Bruce and Serge chose The Compass LGBTQ Community Center as the $500 charity referral donation recipient. The Compass is the only direct service provider for the LGBTQ community in Palm Beach County. With that in mind and in combination with the COVID-19 epidemic, supporting them is more important than ever. Bruce says z’They embolden our youth and promote pride in our community. [The Compass] act as educators, advocates, health services providers, a focal point for community organizing, and as a safe place for LGBTQ people and their allies.”

Meet Bruce and Serge

Bruce was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, and later graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a hotel administration degree. Bruce spent most of his career in the banking industry, where he filled various roles, including compliance, disaster recovery, general financial management and real property management.  

Serge was born in St. Come, Quebec-Canada, and raised in Biddeford, Maine. He has always had a passion for dance; he even received formal training in multiple dance genres at the Boston Conservatory, a top performing arts college in Massachusetts. Serge taught dance for many years both in Maine and Massachusetts He also had a successful career for over 35 years in dining and custodial services at Wellesley College. Still, Serge wouldn’t let his passion go and after work, Serge offered free dance instruction to the colleges’ faculty and staff.

Bruce and Serge met over 41 years ago and legally tied the knot in Massachusetts in 2004. In 2017, they retired from their careers and made their move down to Florida. They found a home in the welcoming and inclusive community of Valencia Bay. Bruce enjoys several hobbies, including walking, swimming, volunteering, and photography. Currently, Bruce chairs the café committee in his community and serves as the Treasurer of the VB Photography club. Serge has had a lifelong passion for dancing and ran a dance club in their community where he would teach ballroom and tap dancing. Unfortunately, COVID-19 put things to an abrupt halt. Still, with the vaccine on the horizon, the hope is to re-launch the dance club as we start settling into a new sense of normalcy with herd immunity.
